Zedan Polo wins the Julius Baer Gold Cup Final


 
10 March 2017, DUBAI, UAE - By Gonzalo Etcheverry: Zedan Polo won the Julius Baer Gold Cup, the most important trophy of the Middle East polo season, after defeating Julius Baer by Habtoor Polo in a great final by 10 goals to 8.
 
Team made up by patron Amr Zedan, Martín Gándara, Octavio Olmedo and 10 goaler superstar Pablo Mac Donough played a great game in field 1 of the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club to achieve the third trophy in a row in the same amount of seasons.
Zedan won the first Julius Baer Gold Cup in 2015, in 2016 they achieved the McLaren Silver Cup and this year they lift the most important trophy of the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series after winning a very tough match against Julius Baer Team.
 
Teamwork and patience were the main keys of the winning team in a very even match.
Score remained even in the first two chukkers and despite Zedan took the lead from the third period onwards, Julius Baer Team always put pressure on them and till the last minutes victory was not secured. Finally it was a 10 goals to 8 triumph for a team that didn´t started the season in the best way but, in the two most important matches of the Julius Baer Gold Cup (semifinal and final), showed up with full potential and with Pablo Mac Donough playing in a superb level.
 
Octavio Olmedo was the MVP of the match and Gete Pintura, played by Pablo Mac Donough in the 2nd and 4th chukker the Best Playing Pony.
Habtoor Al Habtoor, Wolves Team patron, was the amateur top scorer and Alfredo Capella, from Abu Dhabi Polo Team, the professional top scorer.

Bentley Cup Final
Mahra Polo Team, foursome made up by patron Rashid Al Habtoor, Isidro Strada, Juan Ruíz Guiñazú and Jerónimo del Carril won the Bentley Cup after defeating Wolves by 11 goals to 8 in the final.

Julius Baer Team by Habtoor Polo and Zedan Polo will play the Julius Baer Gold Cup Final




7th March 2017, DUBAI, UAE: Julius Baer Team by Habtoor Polo and Zedan Polo will play the great final of the Julius Baer Gold Cup, the most important trophy of the Middle East polo season, after winning today their  respectives  matches in the semifinals of this trophy.

It was an exciting day at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club with Julius Baer defeating Abu Dhabi Polo Team by 9 goals to 8 and Zedan Polo winning their match against Bin Drai in extra time by 7 goals to 6.
Both games were really exciting, with a good level of polo and two outstanding  peformances  by 10 goalers superstars Nicolás Pieres and Pablo Mac Donough in the winning teams.

In the first match of the day, Julius Baer made a great comeback in the third chukker to close a 4 goal gap and played an excellent second half to defeat a very tough opponent.
With  Pieres  playing a superb fourth chukker, scoring a couple of goals to give Julius Baer the lead, patron Mohammed Al Habtoor´s team finally achieved a tough victory by 9 goals to 8 and the ticket to the Julius Baer Gold Cup final.
Nicolás Pieres and Alfredo Capella (Abu Dhabi) were the top  scoreres  of the match with 5 goals each.

The second semifinal of the Julius Baer Gold Cup was pretty much the same. Bin Drai taking the lead in the first two chukkers and a great comeback by Zedan Polo in the third chukker to tie the game  in  5 goals apiece.
In the second  half  actions were really even with score  stucked  in 6 goals apiece during 14 minutes. 
That took the match to extra chukker were Pablo Mac Donough scored the golden goal after a great action to give Zedan Polo the victory by 7 goals to 6 and the ticket to the final.
Pablo Mac Donough, with 6 goals, was the top scorer of the match.

Wolves and Mahra will play the Bentley Cup Final




    6th March 2017, DUBAI, UAE: Wolves Polo and Mahra won today their respective matches for the semifinals of the Bentley Cup at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club and will play next friday the final of this trophy.

Wolves defeated UAE Polo by 10 goals to 8 and Mahra achieved the victory against Desert Palm in extra chukker by 8 goals to 7

In the first match of the day, Wolves and UAE Polo played a come and go game with plenty of great actions. Team made by Ahmed Al Habtoor, Hugo Lewis, Ezequiel Martínez Ferrario and Manuel Crespo played two great chukkers (2nd and 3rd) to achieve a 4 goal gap but in the fourth period UAE made a great comeback to put some pressure on the final chukker.
In the last seven minutes Wolves scored three consecutive goals for a 10-8 victory and the ticket to the Bentley Cup final.

Wolves: 0-1/ 5-2/ 6-2/ 7-6/ 10-8

In the second semifinal of the Bentley Cup, Mahra and Desert Palm held a very tight game that was decided, after a great goal by Isidro Strada, in favor of Mahra by 8 goals to 7.
From the very beginning both teams showed their intentions to achieve the remaining place in the final with a close score during all the match.
After a 7 goal apiece score in the fifth chukker the game went to OT. In the second action of this period Isidro Strada caught the ball in the 60 yards in attack to finish the action with a great goal and give Mahra the victory and the chance to play the final of the Bentley Cup next friday.

​Zedan makes it to the Julius Baer Gold Cup semifinals


4th March 2017, DUBAI, UAE by Gonzalo Etcheverry: The last qualifying matches of the Julius Baer Gold Cup were held today at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club and Zedan, after defeating Bangash by 8 goals to 7, completes the semifinals schedule.

Patron Amr Zedan´s team had to fight till the very end in a very even match to join Abu Dhabi, Bin Drai Polo and Julius Baer Team by Habtoor Polo in the next stage.
With the four teams already qualified the matches in the next round will be the following: Bin Drai Polo will face Zedan and Abu Dhabi will play against Julius Baer Team.
In today´s match, Pablo Mac Donough, ten goaler superstar, was vital in Zedan´s victory scoring 6 of the 8 goals of his team.

Zedan: 1-1/ 2-3/ 4-3/ 5-4/ 8-7

In the first match of the day, Mahra defeated Abu Dhabi by 11 goals to 7 in a full speed high level polo game.
Mahra needed to win his match and wait for a Bangash victory to keep any chances to make it to the semifinals. They did the homework and defeated a great opponent but finally Zedan´s victory left them no chances to qualify.
Mahra will play now the Bentley Cup Semifinals against Desert Palm next monday.
Jerónimo Del Carril (Mahra) was the top scorer of the match with 5 goals and Alfredo Capella the top scorer in Abu Dhabi with 4 goals.

The Julius Baer Gold Cup will continue next monday 6th March at Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club with the Bentley Cup Semifinals. Starting at 2pm, Mahra Polo will play against Desert Palm followed by UAE Polo against Wolves. The Julius Baer Gold Cup semifinals will be held next Tuesday 7th with Bin Drai playing against Zedan followed by Abu Dhabi against Julius Baer Team.

​Julius Baer Team joins Abu Dhabi and Bin Drai Polo in the Julius Baer Gold Cup semifinals



3rd March 2017, DUBAI, UAE by Gonzalo Etcheverry: Julius Baer Team by Habtoor Polo defeated UAE Polo in their last qualifying match and made it to the semifinals of the Julius Baer Gold Cup together with Abu Dhabi and Bin Drai Polo.
Julius Baer Team defeated UAE by 12 goals to 9 and Desert Palm defeated Wolves by 9 goals to 6 in the second match of the day held today at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club.

Julius Baer and UAE Polo played an exciting match, vital for their chances to qualify to the semifinals. 
Both teams knew that victory was the ticket to the following round and patron Mohammed Al Habtoor´s team showed great concentration and teamwork from the very beginning.
A 3 goal gap at half time gave lot´s of confidence to Julius Baer Team, but they knew UAE Polo was going to fight hard to comeback in the match. And so they did. HH Sheika Maitha Al Maktoum´s team put a lot of pressure in the last two chukkers but Julius Baer Team, led by the outstanding ten goaler handicap, Nicolás Pieres, kept a high level and perfect teamwork to achieve the deserved victory by 12 goals to 9 and the ticket to the semifinals of the Julius Baer Gold Cup.
Nicolás Pieres, with 6 goals, was the top scorer of the match.

Julius Baer: 2-1/ 4-2/ 8-5/ 9-8/ 12-9

In the second match of the day, Desert Palm achieved their first victory in the tournament after defeating Wolves by 9 goals to 6.
Both teams played an enjoyable game with patron Tarek Albwardy´s team taking the lead by two goals from the second chukker and keeping the advantage till the very end of the match.
Manuel Crespo (Wolves) was the top scorer of the game with 5 goals.

​Abu Dhabi and Bin Drai remain unbeatable in the Julius Baer Gold Cup


25th February 2017, DUBAI, UAE by Gonzalo Etcheverry: Abu Dhabi and Bin Drai are the only two undefeated teams in the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2017 after a great polo day at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club.

In two exciting games, Abu Dhabi defeated Bangash by 13 goals to 7 and Bin Drai won his match against Mahra by 10 goals to 8. In the first match of the day, Abu Dhabi had to work hard to defeat Bangash, a team that never gives up. Patron Faris Al Yabhouni´s team had in Alfredo Capella the key to achieve the victory after scoring 10 of the 13 goals of Abu Dhabi.
Bangash had a great first half but could not keep up the pace in the second half and in the last two periods, Abu Dhabi achieved to increase the gap in the score and finally won the game by 13 goals to 7.

Abu Dhabi: 3-1/ 4-4/ 7-4/ 9-6/ 13-7

In the second match of the day, Bin Drai and Mahra played an exciting game that was decided in favor of patron Saeed Bin Drai´s team in the last minutes.
Actions were really tight during all the match and when one team achieved a two goal difference, quickly the other team made a comeback to tie the score.
In the last chukker, with Francisco Elizalde in a great afternoon (top scorer of the match with 5 goals), Bin Drai achieved the laborious victory by 10 goals to 8.

​UAE Polo and Zedan victorious in today´s Julius Baer Gold Cup matches


21th February 2017, DUBAI, UAE - by Gonzalo Etcheverry: In another double action day at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club for the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2017, UAE Polo and Zedan achieved two important victories against Wolves and Desert Palm.

UAE Polo defeated Wolves by 8 goals to 7 and Zedan won his match against Desert Palm by 9 goals to 6.

In the first match of the day, HH Sheika Maitha´s team made a great comeback in the last two chukkers to achieve their second victory in a row at the Julius Baer Gold Cup.
After a very good first half by Wolves Polo Team, UAE respond in a great way in the fourth chukker to close the gap from 3 to 1 goals and passed by in the fifth for a 8-7 victory.
Matías Benoit (UAE Polo), with 5 goals, was the top scorer of the match.

UAE Polo: 0-1/ 0-4/ 2-5/ 5-6/ 8-7

In the second match of the day, Zedan played a great game to achieve a deserved victory against Desert Palm by 9 goals to 6.
Patron Amr Zedan´s team worked as such to defeat a tough opponent. 
The foursome led by 10 goaler Pablo Mac Donough played at a great level during all the match to achieve their first victory in the tournament.
Alejo Taranco (Desert Palm) was the top scorer of the game with 4 goals.

Bin Drai remains unbeaten and Mahra achieves first victory in the Julius Baer Gold Cup


22nd February 2017, DUBAI, UAE - by Gonzalo Etcheverry: In another great double action day at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club for the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2017, Bin Drai achieved their second victory in a row while Mahra won “in extremis” to claim their first triumph in the tournament.

Bin Drai defeated Bangash by 12 goals to 8 and Mahra defeated Julius Baer by Habtoor Polo in OT by 11 goals to 10.

In the first match of the day, patron Saeed Bin Drai´s team had in Francisco Elizalde and Raúl Laplacette an effective tandem that worked in great shape from the very beginning.
Bin Drai achieved a 5 goal gap in the second chukker (7-2) and remained unstoppable till the end. That made things really hard for Bangash to come closer in the score.
At the end, Bin Drai kept playing at a great level for a deserved 12-8 victory.

Bin Drai: 4-2/ 7-2/ 8-5/ 11-6/ 12-8

In the second match of the day, Mahra and Julius Baer by Habtoor Polo played one of the most exciting matches of the season.
The victory was for Mahra in OT by 11 goals to 10 after a penalty from the spot scored by Isidro Strada. But it could have gone either way because Julius Baer played also a great match.

Patron Mohammed Al Habtoor´s team had a great start for a two-goal gap in the first two chukkers (2-0/ 4-2) but slowly, and with lot´s of patience, Mahra started to comeback in the third chukker and finally got the lead in the fourth period.
What came next was more than 10 minutes (fifth chukker and the minutes played in extra time) full of excitement.
Both teams had lot´s of chances during that lapse of time but it was finally in the third minute of the extra chukker that Strada, with the spot penalty, gave Mahra the first triumph in the Julius Baer Gold Cup.

Habtoor Wolves and Julius Baer Team winners of today´s Gold Cup matches



19th February 2017, DUBAI, UAE - By Gonzalo Etcheverry: Another exciting double action day was held today at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club for the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2017. Habtoor Wolves and Julius Baer by Habtoor Polo defeated Mahra and Bangash Polo Team.

In the first match of the day, for sure one of the most exciting matches of the season till now, Wolves defeated Mahra by 10 goals to 9 in a match that was decided in the last action of the game.
A great goal by Ezequiel Martínez Ferrario gave Wolves the “in extremis” victory after a great comeback in the fifth chukker.
Mahra had the control of the match in the first half but Wolves never gave up and achieve to close a 3 goal gap in the fourth chukker to enter the last period one goal above (7-8).
In the last 7 minutes, Wolves reaction was accomplished with Manuel Crespo scoring to even the match with 9 goals and the last action by Ferrario for the very celebrated triumph by Habtoor Wolves Team.

Wolves: 3-2/ 3-5/ 4-7/ 7-8/ 10-9

In the second match of the day, Julius Baer Team by Habtoor, with ten goaler Nicolás Pieres playing at a superb level, defeated Bangash by 11 goals to 8.
Patron Mohammed Al Habtoor´s team played a great first half and achieved a comfortable 5 goal gap in the score (9-4).
But Bangash fought hard to close the gap and managed to put some pressure on Julius Baer Team in the fourth chukker.
But Nico Pieres appeared with all his talent in the last seven minutes to warrant a deserved victory by 11 goals to 8.

Bin Drai and Abu Dhabi achieve two great victories in the opening day of the Julius Baer Gold Cup


18 February 2017, DUBAI, UAE: by Gonzalo Etcheverry:  Bin Drai and Abu Dhabi Polo Team started the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2017 in the best way by achieving two great victories against Desert Palm and UAE Polo in the double action day held at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club, Dubai’s first luxury polo and equestrian community located in Dubailand. 
Bin Drai defeated Desert Palm by 10 goals to 3 while Abu Dhabi won against UAE Polo by 12-10.

In the first match of the day, Bin Drai, team made up today by Tarik Al Habtoor, Gregorio Gelosi, Francisco Elizalde and Raúl Laplacette needed the first two chukkers to warm up but from the third period onwards, and with the engines at full speed, they had the control of the actions and the score for a deserved 10 goals to 3 victory.
Francisco Elizalde was the top scorer of the match with 5 goals.

Match progression: Bin Drai: 1-0/ 2-3/ 5-3/ 7-3/ 10-3

The second match of the day showed a much even and tough game, with two teams playing at a great level and the final score decided in the last minutes.
UAE Polo, winners of the McLaren Cup, started in a great shape and led the score in the first two chukkers. But a comeback by Abu Dhabi, with a 5-0 in the third chukker, gave them the lead from halftime till the end of the game.
UAE Polo kept behind in the score by 1 goal and put a lot of pressure on Abu Dhabi. But patron Faris Al Yabhouni´s team, with Alfredo Capella playing at a great level, handled the situation and secured the victory in the last minutes with two consecutive goals for a 12-10 triumph.
Capella was the MVP and top scorer of the match with 10 goals (8 penalties).

The Julius Baer Gold Cup continues tomorrow with another double action day at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club.
