​Abu Dhabi and Bin Drai remain unbeatable in the Julius Baer Gold Cup


25th February 2017, DUBAI, UAE by Gonzalo Etcheverry: Abu Dhabi and Bin Drai are the only two undefeated teams in the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2017 after a great polo day at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club.

In two exciting games, Abu Dhabi defeated Bangash by 13 goals to 7 and Bin Drai won his match against Mahra by 10 goals to 8. In the first match of the day, Abu Dhabi had to work hard to defeat Bangash, a team that never gives up. Patron Faris Al Yabhouni´s team had in Alfredo Capella the key to achieve the victory after scoring 10 of the 13 goals of Abu Dhabi.
Bangash had a great first half but could not keep up the pace in the second half and in the last two periods, Abu Dhabi achieved to increase the gap in the score and finally won the game by 13 goals to 7.

Match progression:
Abu Dhabi: 3-1/ 4-4/ 7-4/ 9-6/ 13-7

In the second match of the day, Bin Drai and Mahra played an exciting game that was decided in favor of patron Saeed Bin Drai´s team in the last minutes.
Actions were really tight during all the match and when one team achieved a two goal difference, quickly the other team made a comeback to tie the score.
In the last chukker, with Francisco Elizalde in a great afternoon (top scorer of the match with 5 goals), Bin Drai achieved the laborious victory by 10 goals to 8.

The Julius Baer Gold Cup will continue Tuesday 28th February with another double action day at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club. Starting at 2 pm, Bin Drai will face Julius Baer Team followed by Wolves against Zedan Polo.

​UAE Polo and Zedan victorious in today´s Julius Baer Gold Cup matches


21th February 2017, DUBAI, UAE - by Gonzalo Etcheverry: In another double action day at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club for the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2017, UAE Polo and Zedan achieved two important victories against Wolves and Desert Palm.

UAE Polo defeated Wolves by 8 goals to 7 and Zedan won his match against Desert Palm by 9 goals to 6.

In the first match of the day, HH Sheika Maitha´s team made a great comeback in the last two chukkers to achieve their second victory in a row at the Julius Baer Gold Cup.
After a very good first half by Wolves Polo Team, UAE respond in a great way in the fourth chukker to close the gap from 3 to 1 goals and passed by in the fifth for a 8-7 victory.
Matías Benoit (UAE Polo), with 5 goals, was the top scorer of the match.

UAE Polo: 0-1/ 0-4/ 2-5/ 5-6/ 8-7

In the second match of the day, Zedan played a great game to achieve a deserved victory against Desert Palm by 9 goals to 6.
Patron Amr Zedan´s team worked as such to defeat a tough opponent. 
The foursome led by 10 goaler Pablo Mac Donough played at a great level during all the match to achieve their first victory in the tournament.
Alejo Taranco (Desert Palm) was the top scorer of the game with 4 goals.

Zedan: 1-0/ 3-1/ 6-1/ 8-3/ 9-6

The Julius Baer Gold Cup will continue tomorrow with another double action day at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club.

Bin Drai remains unbeaten and Mahra achieves first victory in the Julius Baer Gold Cup


22nd February 2017, DUBAI, UAE - by Gonzalo Etcheverry: In another great double action day at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club for the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2017, Bin Drai achieved their second victory in a row while Mahra won “in extremis” to claim their first triumph in the tournament.

Bin Drai defeated Bangash by 12 goals to 8 and Mahra defeated Julius Baer by Habtoor Polo in OT by 11 goals to 10.

In the first match of the day, patron Saeed Bin Drai´s team had in Francisco Elizalde and Raúl Laplacette an effective tandem that worked in great shape from the very beginning.
Bin Drai achieved a 5 goal gap in the second chukker (7-2) and remained unstoppable till the end. That made things really hard for Bangash to come closer in the score.
At the end, Bin Drai kept playing at a great level for a deserved 12-8 victory.

Bin Drai: 4-2/ 7-2/ 8-5/ 11-6/ 12-8

In the second match of the day, Mahra and Julius Baer by Habtoor Polo played one of the most exciting matches of the season.
The victory was for Mahra in OT by 11 goals to 10 after a penalty from the spot scored by Isidro Strada. But it could have gone either way because Julius Baer played also a great match.

Patron Mohammed Al Habtoor´s team had a great start for a two-goal gap in the first two chukkers (2-0/ 4-2) but slowly, and with lot´s of patience, Mahra started to comeback in the third chukker and finally got the lead in the fourth period.
What came next was more than 10 minutes (fifth chukker and the minutes played in extra time) full of excitement.
Both teams had lot´s of chances during that lapse of time but it was finally in the third minute of the extra chukker that Strada, with the spot penalty, gave Mahra the first triumph in the Julius Baer Gold Cup.

Mahra: 0-2/ 2-4/ 5-6/ 9-8/ 10-10/ 11-10

Habtoor Wolves and Julius Baer Team winners of today´s Gold Cup matches



19th February 2017, DUBAI, UAE - By Gonzalo Etcheverry: Another exciting double action day was held today at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club for the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2017. Habtoor Wolves and Julius Baer by Habtoor Polo defeated Mahra and Bangash Polo Team.

In the first match of the day, for sure one of the most exciting matches of the season till now, Wolves defeated Mahra by 10 goals to 9 in a match that was decided in the last action of the game.
A great goal by Ezequiel Martínez Ferrario gave Wolves the “in extremis” victory after a great comeback in the fifth chukker.
Mahra had the control of the match in the first half but Wolves never gave up and achieve to close a 3 goal gap in the fourth chukker to enter the last period one goal above (7-8).
In the last 7 minutes, Wolves reaction was accomplished with Manuel Crespo scoring to even the match with 9 goals and the last action by Ferrario for the very celebrated triumph by Habtoor Wolves Team.

Wolves: 3-2/ 3-5/ 4-7/ 7-8/ 10-9

In the second match of the day, Julius Baer Team by Habtoor, with ten goaler Nicolás Pieres playing at a superb level, defeated Bangash by 11 goals to 8.
Patron Mohammed Al Habtoor´s team played a great first half and achieved a comfortable 5 goal gap in the score (9-4).
But Bangash fought hard to close the gap and managed to put some pressure on Julius Baer Team in the fourth chukker.
But Nico Pieres appeared with all his talent in the last seven minutes to warrant a deserved victory by 11 goals to 8.

Bin Drai and Abu Dhabi achieve two great victories in the opening day of the Julius Baer Gold Cup


18 February 2017, DUBAI, UAE: by Gonzalo Etcheverry:  Bin Drai and Abu Dhabi Polo Team started the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2017 in the best way by achieving two great victories against Desert Palm and UAE Polo in the double action day held at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club, Dubai’s first luxury polo and equestrian community located in Dubailand. 
Bin Drai defeated Desert Palm by 10 goals to 3 while Abu Dhabi won against UAE Polo by 12-10.

In the first match of the day, Bin Drai, team made up today by Tarik Al Habtoor, Gregorio Gelosi, Francisco Elizalde and Raúl Laplacette needed the first two chukkers to warm up but from the third period onwards, and with the engines at full speed, they had the control of the actions and the score for a deserved 10 goals to 3 victory.
Francisco Elizalde was the top scorer of the match with 5 goals.

Match progression: Bin Drai: 1-0/ 2-3/ 5-3/ 7-3/ 10-3

The second match of the day showed a much even and tough game, with two teams playing at a great level and the final score decided in the last minutes.
UAE Polo, winners of the McLaren Cup, started in a great shape and led the score in the first two chukkers. But a comeback by Abu Dhabi, with a 5-0 in the third chukker, gave them the lead from halftime till the end of the game.
UAE Polo kept behind in the score by 1 goal and put a lot of pressure on Abu Dhabi. But patron Faris Al Yabhouni´s team, with Alfredo Capella playing at a great level, handled the situation and secured the victory in the last minutes with two consecutive goals for a 12-10 triumph.
Capella was the MVP and top scorer of the match with 10 goals (8 penalties).

The Julius Baer Gold Cup continues tomorrow with another double action day at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club.

Mahra wins the Polo Masters Cup


14th February 2017, DUBAI, UAE:  Mahra Polo Team won the Polo Masters Cup 2017 for the second year in a row after defeating Habtoor Polo in today´s final match at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club.

Team made up by patron Rashid Al Habtoor, Daniel Gariador, Juan Ruíz Guiñazú and Jerónimo del Carril won by 8 goals to 4 for a successful title defense while Bin Drai achieved the third position in the tournament after defeating Wolves by 9-6.

Mahra played a great game from the very beginning, with a team strategy that worked nearly to perfection to defeat a very tough Habtoor Polo team.
In the third chukker, with a 6-goal gap, Mahra headed towards the title despite of Habtoor reaction in the last chukker.

Jerónimo del Carril was the MVP of the final and Quini, owned by Mahra and played by Juan Ruíz Guiñazú in the fourth chukker, the Best Playing Pony.
Del Carril and Ruíz Guiñazú were the top scorers of the match with 4 goals each.

Mahra: 3-1/ 7-2/ 8-2/ 8-4

In the first match of the final day for the Polo Masters Cup, Bin Drai Polo defeated Wolves Polo by 9 goals to 6 to achieve the third position in the tournament.
Raúl Laplacette, with 6 goals, was the top scorer of the game.

Polo Masters Cup
The Polo Masters Cup is a prestigious 14-goal handicap tournament played under the umbrella of the Dubai polo Gold Cup series. Five teams have taken part in this prestigious tournament, reaching the winner on Tuesday1 4th of February.
The tournament was inaugurated in 2016 adding to the Medium and High Goal season in the UAE, giving players and patrons more opportunities to further their skills in competition, elevating the level of polo in the region.


The Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series enters its eighth year under the Patronage of HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai.  The Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series consists of 5 tournaments, two medium-goal (Polo Masters Cup 14 goal, Dubai Cup 10 goal) and three of 18 goal handicap (McLaren Cup, Julius Baer Gold Cup, Dubai Challenge Cup).

The Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series matches will all be played at the newly inaugurated Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club, Dubai Land.

​Bin Drai wins the last qualifying match





12th February 2017, DUBAI, UAE:  With today´s Bin Drai victory against Bangash by 6 goals to 4, the qualifying round of the Polo Masters Cup came to an end.

Despite of this victory, Bin Drai couldn´t make it to the final of the tournament and Habtoor Polo, with better goal difference, will play the Polo Masters Cup final against Mahra next tuesday at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort.

Bin Drai needed to win by 6 or more goals difference to qualify to the final but Bangash didn´t make thinks easy for the foursome made up by Rashid Al Falahi, Stuart Wrigley, Francisco Elizalde and Raúl Laplacette.

The winning team push hard to achieve the objective but finally the victory was by a two goal gap (6-4)
Raúl Laplacette (Bin Drai) was the top scorer of the match with 5 goals

Next tuesday, Habtoor Polo and Mahra Polo will be playing the final of the Polo Masters Cup from 4 pm. Starting at 2.30 pm, Bin Drai and Wolves will be playing the 3rd place match.














Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series
The Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series (Dubai Open), an 18 Goal Handicap competition, enters its eighth year under the Patronage of HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai.  The tournament is now the highest handicap in the UAE.

The Dubai Open has been split into two tournaments. Starting with the McLaren Cup, which runs from Saturday January 21st, 2017 to Friday February 3rd, 2017. The second tournament, the Julius Baer Gold Cup, commences on Friday, February 18th, 2017 to Friday March 10th, 2017.

The Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series is the fourth-largest tournament of its kind after Argentina, the US and the UK. First founded by Mohammed Al Habtoor in 2009, the tournament is the premier regional polo competition of the year, and attracts VIPs, society figures, and senior corporate executives from across the GCC.   It has grown in tandem with the city of Dubai and since 2012, it is the only tournament in the UAE to be recognized and certified by the World Polo Tour (WPT).   It is played under the banner of the Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA), with the Gold Cup being played according to HPA rules and the provision of umpires is managed under strict international supervision by the HPA.

Mohammed Al Habtoor, Founder of the tournament and patron of the Habtoor Polo team said, “This year there are seven teams playing in the McLaren Cup and ten teams for the Julius Baer Gold Cup, further evidence that the tournaments continue to grow. The Dubai Open has helped put the UAE on the world polo circuit. Each year the competition gets better and better, and we attract some of the best polo players in the world.”
The participating teams will host some of the top-ranking World Polo Tour players, including Pablo Mac Donough, the 10-goal superstar and three-time ‘Triple Crown Champion with La Dolfina’; Nicolas Pieres, who was recently raised to 10 goals after his superb performance in the Argentine Open; Lucas Montverde (9-goal handicap); Alfredo Cappella Barabucci (9-goal handicap) Guillermo Terrera (8-goal handicap), and Ezquiel Martinez Ferrario (8-goal handicap) and many others, who have come directly from Argentine Open.

Mahra wins their second match in a row and makes it to the final of the Polo Masters Cup


10th February 2017, DUBAI, UAE by Gonzalo Etcheverry:  Mahra Polo Team defeated today Wolves Polo by 8 goals to 5 and will play the final of the Polo Masters Cup next tuesday 14th february at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort.
 
After winning their second match in a row, team made up by patron Rashid Al Habtoor, Daniel Gariador, Juan Ruíz Guiñazú and Jerónimo del Carril will play the deciding match of this tournament were they defend title after winning 2016 edition.
 
Mahra and Wolves played a very nice match, with full speed action and great goals. A 3-0 lead in the first seven minutes gave Mahra an interesting income for the rest of the game.
 
Wolves never gave up and with Ezequiel Gallego and Isidro Strada pushing hard from the back positions managed to some pressure on Mahra in the second and last chukker.
But finally Mahra achieved the deserved victory and the ticket to the Polo Masters Cup final.
 
Jerónimo del Carril (Mahra) with 6 goals was the top scorer of the match and Isidro Strada, with 4, the scorer in Wolves team.

​Outstanding victory of Habtoor Polo in today´s match for the Polo Masters Cup

 



9th February 2017, DUBAI, UAE:  The Polo Masters Cup action resumed today with a single match at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort.

Habtoor Polo, team made up by Ahmed Al Habtoor, Gregorio Gelosi, Tomás Beresford and Guillermo Cuitiño achieved an outstanding victory after defeating Bin Drai by 7 goals to 4.

The winning team took control of the match from the very beginning and with three chukkers played at a very high level, achieving a 5 goal gap difference, secured the victory despite of Bin Drai´s reaction in the last chukka.

Guillermo Cuitiño and Tomás Beresford (Habtoor Polo) were the top scorers of the match with 3 goals each.

Victories of Mahra and Wolves in the opening matches of the Polo Masters Cup


7th February 2017, DUBAI, UAE - By Gonzalo Etcheverry:  The Polo Masters Cup, the second trophy of the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series 2017, began today at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort.

Mahra Polo and Wolves won the opening matches of this tournament with 5 teams up to 14 goal handicap taking part.

Mahra defeated Habtoor Polo by 9 goals to 8 in a thrilling and tough match and Wolves, with a great team work achieved a deserved victory against Bangash by 8 goals to 5.

Guillermo Cuitiño (Habtoor Polo) was the top scorer in the first match with 5 goals and Isidro Strada (Wolves) also with 5 goals, the top scorer in Wolves triumph.

Matches progression:
Mahra: 3-2/ 5-3/ 7-6/ 9-8

Wolves: 1-1/ 4-1/ 6-2/ 8-5

The Masters Cup will continue next Thursday at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort with one single match between Habtoor Polo and Bin Drai from 4pm.
