Another Win for Desert Palm and Habtoor Polo Teams at the Silver Cup 2019

Both Desert Palm and Habtoor Polo teams remain unbeaten as they battled it out on the fields of Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club against Zedan and Mahra Polo teams respectively.
 
In the first match, Camillo “Jeta
” Castagnola took the first 2 goals for Desert Palm Polo team, and the team stayed with a 3-goal lead until the third chukker. The team ended the match with a win against Zedan with 9 goals to 4.

The second match saw a strong 
defense demonstrated by both teams. Habtoor Polo took the lead against Mahra with Facundo “Facu” Sola scoring the first goal by the second chukker. Halfway through the match, Hugo Lewis scored a goal with a pass from Tommy Beresford whilst Mahra team drove home 2 goals from Pelayo Berazadi and a last-second goal from Tariq Al Habtoor. Habtoor kept the lead in the last two chukkers and finally closed the game at 7 goals to 5.

Ghantoot Polo and UAE Polo Teams taking the Win on the Second Day of the Silver Cup 2019

01/26/2019, DUBAI, UAE: It was a double action day at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club, as four teams delivered two intense matches during the second day of the Silver Cup 2019.
 
The first game witnessed two teams start out strongly and ended in a tie on the first chukker with Habtoor Al Habtoor, patron of the Dubai Wolves getting the best of Ghantoot Polo team from the halfway line. Ghantoot Polo team broke the tie with a backhand shot from Juan Gris Zavaleta and the team gained and maintained a 3 goal advantage until the end of the fifth chukker closing the game at 8 goals to 5. Juan Gris Zavaleta was the top scorer with 6 goals from Ghantoot Polo team and Habtoor Al Habtoor with 2 goals for Dubai Wolves.

The highly anticipated second game saw a fast start as Abu Dhabi Polo team took the lead from UAE Polo with a 2-goal advantage until the end of the second chukker. UAE Polo team came back by closing in on its opponent with succeeding goals from Alejandro "Ace" Muzzio and by the fourth chukker the teams were tied at 5-5. Alfredo Cappella (Abu Dhabi Polo) and Ace traded blows throughout the final chukker. HH Sheikha Maitha bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum scored a goal for the team by running it from the halfway line and settling the fifth chukker in another tie. With an extra chukker required, the golden goal was scored by Tomas Panelo bringing home the win for UAE Polo with 8 goals to 7. Top scorer from the UAE Polo team was Ace Muzzio and Alfredo Cappella from Abu Dhabi Polo team with 4 goals each.

Triumph for the Habtoor Polo and Desert Palm Polo Teams at the Silver Cup 2019 Opening Day

01/25/2019, DUBAI, UAE: The 2019 Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series kicks-off with the Silver Cup as Habtoor Polo and Desert Palm Polo teams won on the first day of the tournament held at the grounds of Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club.

The Silver Cup, an 18-goal handicap tournament, opened with a match between Zedan Polo and Habtoor Polo ending with a score of 11 goals to 7. The excitement continued as Desert Palm Polo played against Mahra Polo scoring 11 to 6 in favour of Desert Palm Polo team.

The first game began at full speed as Habtoor Polo scored 4 quick goals by end of the first chukker - equally delivered by Hugo Lewis and Facundo (Facu) Sola. The team's patron, Mohammed Al Habtoor, made a double tap goal bringing the crowd into a loud cheer. The match continued with Habtoor in the lead against Zedan closing the game at 11 - 7 in favour of Habtoor. Facu Sola was the top scorer from the winning team with 4 goals and Gato Gandara with 3 goals for Zedan Polo Team.

Habtoor Polo: 4 – 1 | 6 – 1 | 8 – 1 | 10 ‐ 5 | 11 – 7

The second match started as a close one until the end of the second chukker with teams tied at 3 – 3. By the end of the third chukker, Camillo (
Jeta) Castagnola created a 4 goal advantage for Desert Palm Polo team. Mahra Polo team scored a few goals towards the end of the match, however, Rashid Albwardy, the team’s patron and Jeta served 3 consecutive goals taking the lead further and ultimately achieving victory with a final score of 11 goals to 6 in favour of Desert Palm Polo team.

Another double action day awaits the supporters of the Silver Cup on 26th January 2019, Saturday. Four teams will compete at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club - Dubai Wolves vs. Ghantoot Polo at 14:00 followed by a match between Abu Dhabi Polo vs. UAE Polo at 16:00.

01/21/2019, DUBAI, UAE: The Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series (Dubai Open), an 18-goal handicap competition celebrating its 10th year anniversary under the Patronage of HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, launched its 2019 season on Monday, 21 January 2019 where the organizing committee conducted a live draw for the Silver Cup 2019 fixture at the Habtoor Ballroom, Habtoor Palace, LXR Hotels & Resorts.
 
Five tournaments fall under the umbrella of the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series: the Silver Cup (18 goal handicap), which will run from 25 January to 8 February; the Polo Masters Cup (10 goal handicap) from 10 to 15 February; the Julius Baer Gold Cup (18 goal handicap) from 18 February to 8 March; the Dubai Challenge Cup (18 goal handicap) from 15 to 30 March; and the Dubai Cup (6-8 goal handicap) from 2 to 12 April 2019.
 
The Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series held in the UAE, is one of only five tournaments in the world played in the WPT Championship Cup category, on a par with world-class events held in Argentina, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States. It was founded by its Chairman Mohammed Al Habtoor in 2009. It started with tournaments carrying a handicap of 10-12 goals and has grown to host teams playing in 18-goal handicap matches.
 
Mohammed Al Habtoor, Founder of the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series and patron of Habtoor Polo team, said, “I am very excited about the lineup of players in this year’s Silver Cup. The eight participating teams will feature top-ranking World Polo Tour players, including Facundo Sola (ranked 12 in the world) and Alfredo Capella Barabucci (ranked 27 in the world), who are both 9-goal handicap players. Two 8-goal handicap players have also confirmed their participation; Alejandro Muzzio (ranked 28 in the world) and Juan Gris Zavaleta (ranked 24 in the world), and many others who have come directly from the Argentine Open.

The Dubai Open is the premier regional polo competition of the year, attracting VIPs, society figures, and senior corporate executives from across the region. It has grown in tandem with the city of Dubai. Since 2012, it is the only tournament in the United Arab Emirates that is recognized and certified by the World Polo Tour (WPT).
 
Under the WPT Challenge Cup Category, the winners of the Silver Cup are awarded 50 points and 20 points within the Dubai Challenge Cup. The Gold Cup tournament is a part of the WPT Championship Cup – the highest competition in terms of points – and allots 80 points to its winners. The Dubai Open is played under the banner of the Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA), with the tournaments being played under strict international supervision according to the HPA rules and provision of its umpires.

The Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series (Dubai Open) was founded in 2009 by Mohammed Al Habtoor, patron of the Habtoor Polo team. Each year the tournament reaches new heights. In 2012 the Gold Cup was recognized by the World Polo Tour (WPT), and in January 2014 the WPT committee credited The Gold Cup tournament as the highest competition in terms of points within the WPT Challenge Cup category, elevating it to 50 points for the winner. Bin Drai crowned winners of the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2018



03/09/2018: DUBAI, UAE: Bin Drai won the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2018 after defeating Abu Dhabi in the final by 13 goals to 9 in a great day at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club. A well deserved triumph for an organization that, after several attempts, finally achieves the most important trophy of the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series. Bin Drai proved that is the best team of the season after playing at a very high level today against Abu Dhabi.
 
After losing the final of the McLaren Cup against Zedan, team made up by patron Rashid Bin Drai, Andrés Laplacette, Matías Torres Zavaleta and Raúl Laplacette became stronger in the Gold Cup and achieved it´s reward by lifting the Julius Baer Gold Cup. Bin Drai was far superior to his rival and showed his intentions from the first minute. They knew they couldn´t waste another opportunity (after losing years ago a couple of finals) and played the best game of the season. Teamwork and concentration from the first minute till the very end were the keys of a deserved 13 goals to 9 victory.
 
Andrés Laplacette was named the Most Valuable Player of the final (MVP) and Cruzeiro (played by Raúl Laplacette in the 1st and 4th chukker) the Best Playing Pony (BPP). Cruzeiro was also the BPP of the McLaren Silver Cup 2018. Desert Palm achieved the Bentley Cup after defeating Habtoor Polo by 7 goals to 5 in the final.

Bin Drai and Abu Dhabi are the finalists of the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2018



03/06/2018: DUBAI, UAE: Bin Drai and Abu Dhabi will play the Julius Baer Gold Cup Final after winning their respective semifinal matches today against Zedan and Mahra. In a double action day at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club, Abu Dhabi defeated Mahra by 9 goals to 7 and Bin Drai won his match against Zedan by 6 goals to 5. They where two very tough semifinal matches with five chukkers of pure energy and enthusiasm. Teams fought hard to achieve the desired ticket to the final of the Julius Baer Gold Cup, the most important match of the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series 2018.
 
Abu Dhabi and Bin Drai had to fight really hard to defeat Mahra and Zedan. Patron Faris Al Yabhouni´s team after a great start (with a 5-1 lead in the second chukker) saw how Mahra closed the gap and put pressure on them till the very end.
Finally in the last chukker they achieved to handle the advantage to close a 9-7 victory.
 
Bin Drai had a similar situation to handle after a comeback in half time and then playing two even chukkers. A penalty from the spot, scored by Raúl Laplacette, decided the game in favor of Bin Drai by a close 6 goals to 5.

Habtoor Polo and Desert Palm will play the Bentley Cup Final



03/05/2018: DUBAI, UAE: Habtoor Polo and Desert Palm will play the Bentley Cup Subsidiary Final of the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2018 after winning today their respective matches against UAE Polo and Wolves. In a double action day at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club, Desert Palm defeated Wolves by 11 goals to 7 and Habtoor won his match against UAE Polo by 8 goals to 7. With this results both teams will play the Bentley Cup Final on Friday 9th March before the Julius Baer Gold Cup Final, the most important trophy of the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series 2018.

Zedan and Mahra qualify to the semifinals of the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2018

 

03/02/2018: DUBAI, UAE: Zedan and Mahra will play the semifinals of the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2018 against Bin Drai and Abu Dhabi after winning today their respective quarterfinal matches in a thrilling double action day at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club. Zedan defeated Habtoor Polo by 12 goals to 9 and Mahra defeated Wolves in over time by 8 goals to 7. With these victories both teams qualified to semifinals where Zedan will play against Bin Drai and Mahra will face Abu Dhabi. Both matches will be held next Tuesday 6th March at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club.
 
On the other hand, Habtoor Polo and Wolves will play the Bentley Cup Subsidiary Semifinals next Monday 5th March. Habtoor will play against UAE Polo and Wolves will face Desert Palm.

The Julius Baer Gold Cup (Dubai Open), an 18-goal handicap competition, is one of the only tournaments in the United Arab Emirates to be recognized and certified by the World Polo Tour (WPT) and ranked by the highly coveted ‘WPT Cup’, resulting in winners receiving 60 points for their victory. The tournament is played under the banner of the Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) and under strict international supervision according to the HPA rules and provision of its umpires.

Bin Drai wins and makes its way to the semifinals



02/27/2018: DUBAI, UAE: In another exciting double action day at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club, Bin Drai qualified to the semifinals of the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2018 while Habtoor and Mahra joined Zedan and Wolves in the quarterfinal round to be held next friday.
 
In today’s matches, Bin Drai defeated Mahra by 9 goals to 6 after a great team performance and Habtoor won his match against Desert Palm by 7 goals to 6 in a very contested game. Bin Drai Polo proved once more that is a very serious foursome and a tough opponent and with today’s victory against Mahra qualified directly to the semifinals where they join Abu Dhabi.

In the second match of the day, Habtoor Polo achieved a decisive victory against Desert Palm in a very close game. They played knowing that the winner will be in the quarterfinal round and both teams fought hard during the five chukkers for the big prize.
A great individual action by Francisco Elizalde, with one minute to go, gave Habtoor Polo the victory and the ticket to the next round of the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2018.

The Julius Baer Gold Cup 2018 will return next Friday to the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club with the Quarterfinal matches for the Julius Baer Gold Cup.
Zedan Polo will play against Habtoor from 2 pm followed by Wolves against Mahra from 4 pm.

Abu Dhabi ends unbeaten in the qualification round of the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2018



02/26/2018: DUBAI, UAE: The qualification round for the Zone A of the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2018 ended this afternoon with victories by Abu Dhabi and Zedan. Abu Dhabi defeated UAE Polo Team by 7 goals to 6 and Zedan won his match against Wolves by 9 goals to 8. With this results Abu Dhabi ended unbeaten the qualification round and made it directly to the semifinals while Zedan (who achieved the second place in the zone) and Wolves will play the quarterfinal round with rivals to be determined in tomorrow Zone B last qualification games.
