Another Win for Abu Dhabi Polo and UAE Polo Teams at the Dubai Open 2019 Qualifiers

Four teams faced each other at the Julius Baer Gold Cup 2019 qualifiers held at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club. Abu Dhabi Polo team won their match against Mahra Polo with 10 goals to 8 and the next game saw UAE Polo beat Desert Palm Polo team with a last second goal which settled in a final score of 10 – 9.
 
Abu Dhabi Polo Team had an early lead with 2 goals from the team's patron - Faris Al Yabhouni and Guy Gibrat. Mahra on their tail closed the second chukker in a tie, 2-2. The string of goals that Alfredo Cappella had scored for the team until the end of the fourth chukker had given the Abu Dhabi Polo team a 4-goal advantage. The last chukker saw Mahra close in on its opponent with individual goals from its three of its players. In spite of Mahra's efforts, Abu Dhabi was still in the lead with a goal and Pelayo Berazadi sealed off the win with the last goal ending the match at 10 goals to 8 in favour of Abu Dhabi.

An exciting match ensued between UAE Polo and Desert Palm Polo teams. With a series of goals from both sides, the game reached halftime with a score of 5 - 4 in favour of the UAE Polo team. Rufino Bensadon and Bart Castagnola delivered goals which took the lead for Mahra by the end of the fourth chukker. The intensity of the match increased as the fifth chukker rolled in with both teams trying to take the lead from each other. With a few seconds left on the clock, Tomas Panelo bagged the win for UAE Polo, ended the match at 10 goals to 9 and secured a spot for the team in the semifinals.

The Julius Baer Gold Cup, an 18-goal handicap tournament continues with the last of its qualification matches on 26 February 2019 at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club. Zedan will play against Dubai Wolves at 14:00 and Ghantoot Polo vs. Habtoor Polo at 16:00.

The Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series held in the UAE is one of only five tournaments in the world played in the WPT Championship Cup category, on a par with world-class events held in Argentina, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States. It was founded by its Chairman Mohammed Al Habtoor in 2009. The Silver Cup and the Dubai Challenge Cup falls under the World Polo Tour (WPT) Challenge Cup Category awarding the winners of the Silver Cup with 50 points, the finalists with 25, semi-finalists with 10 and the rest of the players with 5 points; and Dubai Challenge Cup winners with 20 points. The Gold Cup is under the WPT Championship Cup – the highest competition in terms of points, awarding its winners with 80 points.
